My wife has always wanted a mailbox with a little red flag on it. So for Christmas I made her one.
This mailbox is made from cedar. Cedar is great for anything that's going to live outdoors, its natural oils make it generally resistant to water and insects, and it is less likely to warp or sag than other woods.
There were three primary details I wanted to include on this mailbox, the first was clearly the flag. The flag was laser cut MDF painted red. I also cut a small piece of MDF and attached it to the back of the flag. This was designed to be caught by the lid of the mailbox, erecting the flag when it is opened.
The next detail was our surname, engraved using the laser cutter. And finally the chalkboard area, which my wife loves to use to wish people happy birthdays, say hello to the postman, and generally spread joy.
