These rattles were baby shower gifts for our friends who were having babies almost simultaneously. They are made from maple which, owing to it's antibacterial properties, is great for things that will inevitably end up in little mouths.
I started with simple designs in Inkscape, which I printed and attached to a 1 inch maple board. Using a pencil, I shaded the edges of the paper templates, then used a scroll saw to cut out the designs. The hole in the center was also cut using the scroll saw.
The hoops are threaded on to a length of quarter inch doweling, and were colored using a solution of water and food dye. Finally, I finished the rattles with mineral oil.
